Who’s Your Daddy?
March 28, 2008 — lrubin39I have to admit. The first thing that went through my head were visions of women with Q-tips in hand, trying to find ways to obtain saliva samples from the cheeks of men they’ve “befriended”.
Why?
There’s a new, do-it-yourself DNA paternity test that is being sold in drug stores throughout the country. (see article)
The entire kit (included lab processing) costs about $150, and results come back with 98-99% accuracy.
Anybody nervous???
Seriously, what impact, if any, do you think selling do-it-yourself paternity tests will have on those you know?

I think if we are going to impower folks we still have to consider the fact that lives will be forever changed in one respect or another. These kits will not mean that the fathers will be around, nor do they mean that the women who are pregnant will be anything more than just a “baby’s momma”. Nothing is ever guaranteed it just puts the responsibility on the folks involved and takes the thrill away from Jerry Springer and Maury Povich!

I am pleased to report that those do-it-yourself kits won’t have any impact on folks I know. Everyone (in my circle) has made their contribution to society in terms of having children and I am pleased to say paternity has been established prior to birth.

as long as these tests are admissable into court, it won’t matter…my OB still required me to take a pregnancy test in her office, even though the one I took at home said I was pregnant…and I felt a little sick…
the at-home HIV test hasn’t really done much yet…this prob won’t either…
although…
Maury might not have as many men to test if the “accuser” can test a few at home..

Interesting article…I don’t really see this product becoming mainstream, unless the price of the kit becomes cheaper.
