22,000 dead; 41,000 missing; 1 million homeless
May 6, 2008 — lrubin39A cyclone unleashed winds, floods and high tidal waves on the citizens of a densely populated region in Myanmar (in Asia). The result, so far, is roughly 22,000 confirmed deaths, and more than 41,000 others missing. (See Article)
Here’s a note I just got from a friend of mine after he read an article about the devastation…
I’m blown away at the devastation, what if anything can we do as Christians? What type of relief or agencies should we be aligning ourselves to?
I’m just throwing these questions out to you, I know what should be done, but do we really take the necessary steps to see that it happens? Peace,
Now, I know that all of our readers aren’t Christians. I don’t think we have to be. The question, and challenge, still remain…What can we do as FELLOW HUMAN BEINGS to extend a helping hand to those in need?
Let’s come together and do something!

I have no clue. It seems kind of cliche’ and even like a cop-out to say that you’ll pray for them. The country is run by a military regime so you can’t really send money and goods. What can be done? I have no idea.
On another note, I found it interesting that Laura Bush was chastising the Myanmar government for their slow response. Are you kidding me? Can you say, “Katrina”? I think that’s why they had her make these statements and not President Bush. I found that interesting.

In the past I know Red Cross has helped (like in the case of the Tsunami) and I donated to the Red Cross. I’m waiting to see which legitimate organizations will be offering help and will contribute to one. -Melissa

oh my goodness.. my satellite service is shut off right now so i haven’t even heard about this… well i guess you could say that this is what i’ll be thinking about for the next few days… how awful; i don’t even know where to start thinking about how to help. we have to be real with ourselves. in reality, what CAN we do? there are so many obstacles in our own way to make it even possible to help - short of giving money for someone else to do it and praying…

I am going to pray for them since the government is not letting our food get to them.
