Have Any Black in You?

Maybe it’s because presidential candidate Barach Obama is “mixed”, but I’ve seen a lot of stuff written lately on “multiracial” Americans.  For the last couple days, MSN has been doing a piece on Multiracial Americans.

The articles say that the number of multiracial individuals is growing at an incredible pace.  Due to the increase in interracial relationships, the offspring from these relationships is creating an emerging segment of the US population.

As it relates to multiracial individuals, what do you think the American “Melting Pot” will look like in 20 years?

When Morehouse Became the WHITE House

Thanks for sharing, Dwayne.

Morehouse is an institution that is recognized for its longstanding tradition of educating young Black men.  It is one of the nation’s premier HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

However, a unique situation at Morehouse this year provides an opportunity for discussion.

For the first time in the school’s 141 year history…the valedictorian is White.  (see article)

Joshua Packwood, from the Kansas City area, is graduating from Morehouse with a 4.0 GPA in Economics.  According to the article, Packwood is familiar with being in the minority.  He was one of a few white students in his high school class.  Also, some of his siblings are “mixed” because his mother was married to a Black man.

Do you see any issues with White students attending predominant Black schools?

Is the Suspect Black?

I’ve been debating whether or not I should share this post for a long time.  With the readers being so diverse, I wasn’t sure what type of reaction I’d get.  However, the issue keeps coming up, so I feel almost obligated to put it out there and get your feedback.

Recently there was a shooting at Northern Illinois University.  This is one of many shootings recently.  And each time there’s breaking news about some tragedy, I found that I ask myself the same question EVERY TIME.

What is the first question you ask yourself when you hear about a tragedy?

For me, it’s not…Is everyone OK?  It’s not…Has the person been caught?  It’s not…What made them do such a thing?

No.  My FIRST question is…Is the suspect Black?

Yes, I do ask the other questions.  But my initial reaction involves the racial identity of the perpetrator.

Does anybody else ask themselves a similar question?

Black Enough?

At a recent debate, Senator Barack Obama was asked if he was “authentically Black enough”.

Without any introductory comments, let me ask…

What does it mean to be Black? And how “Black” do you have to be to be “Black enough”?
